Lenore Vondracek Filip, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, June 16, 2014, at The Meth-Wick Community. Celebration of Life services will be 3 p.m. Friday, July 18, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. A celebration gathering will be from 2 until 3 p.m. Friday. Inurnment will follow in Czech National Cemetery.
Lenore was born Aug. 26, 1917, in Yale, S.D., the daughter of Emil and Anna (Volesky) Vondracek. After graduating from Yale High School in 1934, she attended Cedar Rapids Business College. Upon graduating in 1935, she was employed as a secretary in the law offices of Guy Linville and Carl Hendrickson in Cedar Rapids. In 1939, she went to Chicago to work for a New York Stock Exchange firm on LaSalle Street.
On Aug. 20, 1940, she was united in marriage with Robert Thomas Filip, the son of Frank and Marie Filip of Cedar Rapids. Robert preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1995.
In July 1941, they moved from Chicago to Clinton, Iowa, where Robert was treasurer of Fidelity Life Association, located in Fulton, Ill. They lived in Clinton until January 1969, when Robert was named vice president and treasurer of Mutual Trust Life Insurance Co. in Oakbrook, Ill. They returned to the Chicago area, living in the western suburb of Downers Grove, until Robert's re-tirement in 1980.
Lenore was a member of First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the PEO Sisterhood and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star. She contributed many volunteer hours of work to the American Red Cross, Jane Lamb Hospital and her church when living in Clinton and Downers Grove. Since her move to The Meth-Wick Community in April 1996, she has given many hours of service to St. Luke's Hospital as a volunteer.
Lenore is survived by her nieces, Kaye (O'Keefe) Wolkow of De Smet, S.D., Carolyn (O'Keefe) Brandt of Shoreview, Minn., and Susan Filip Bearbower of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Thomas Filip; her sister, Irma O'Keefe of De Smet, S.D.; and her brother, Leon Vondracek of Belle Fourche, S.D.
