Judith "Judy" A. Berger, 83, of South Amana, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Middle Amana Church in Middle Amana, with Elder Emilie Hoppe officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Middle Amana Church in Middle Amana. Burial will follow the funeral service in South Amana Cemetery.
Judy was born Jan. 27, 1934, near Central City in rural Linn County, the daughter of Ralph and Alice (Price) Akers. She was the oldest of four children. She attended Prairie Chapel Country School through grade two, when the family moved to a farm near Troy Mills, where she completed high school in 1952. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) and obtained her teaching certificate in 1954. While at Iowa State Teachers College, she met her future husband, George Berger. Judy taught elementary school for three years in Parkersburg and two years in Amana. She substitute taught periodically for many years and also taught Sunday school for over 30 years.
Judy was a devoted mother and wife and a friend to all. She and her husband were very active for many years in the production of hand-woven rugs. They also maintained a large garden and she was an excellent cook. Judy had a large extended family and she was the anchor and family historian for those families. Judy loved to cook, can, bake and tend to her garden.
Those left to honor her life include her husband of 59 years, George Berger; her children, Jeffrey (Geri McMahon) Berger of West Des Moines, Jennifer (Nathan) Wrage of Gladbrook and Jeremy (Andrea) Berger of Chicago; her grandchildren, Jessica (Andy) Schroeder, Jenna (Leo Anderson) Berger, Angela (Maruf) Ablaberdiev, Tyler Wrage, Noah Berger and Gabriel Berger; her siblings, Ron (Brenda Daniel) Akers, Dianne (Robert) Graham and Don (Pat) Akers; sister-in-law, Katie Berger; and many nieces and nephews.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Akers and Alice Price Akers; her husband's parents, Henry and Elise (Leichsenring) Berger; her brother-in-law, Ray Berger; and her sisters-in-law, Beverly and Annette Akers.
