Robert Joseph McAleer, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 29, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, officiated by the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky. Burial: 2 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery, south of Ryan. A visitation will be from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.
Survivors include his children, Timothy (Mary) of Fort Worth, Texas, Marjorie (Gene) Malloy of Lisle, Ill., Susan (Craig) Metzger of Phoenix, James (Diann) of Cedar Rapids, Richard of Naperville, Ill., Catherine (Robert) Digney of Cleveland, Ohio, Annette (Michael) Petersen of Papillion, Neb., and Thomas of San Francisco, Calif.; and two sisters, Eleanor Monaghan of Independence and Loretta Reidy of Cedar Rapids.
He also is survived by 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Rosemary; his daughter, Mary Rita; and his parents, Timothy and Marie.
Robert was born March 15, 1925, in rural Masonville, Iowa, to Timothy and Marie (Cashman) McAleer. He attended Immaculate Conception Church School. Robert was united in marriage to Rosemary Kathleen Devine on Nov. 20, 1948, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ryan.
Robert worked as a fireman for Alliant Energy for 41 years. He was a dedicated member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing golf, cards, dancing and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Family would like to extend a special thanks to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Judith Buchanan and Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Also a special thanks to the staff at Keystone Place and a very dear friend, Mary Ironside.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Alzheimer's Association.
