Ann was born July 22, 1947, in Scranton, Pa., the daughter of A. Rudolph and Helen Grave York. Ann earned her Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in philosophy and humanities from the University of Pennsylvania and her B.A. degree from Bucknell University. Ann joined ACT in June 1986 as vice president of the Operations Division. Since that time, she had overseen the administration, delivery and customer service components of ACT-owned and client sponsored programs. Ann had recently been promoted to the position of senior vice president.
Ann came to Iowa City from Cornell University, where she had been director of university admissions. Before then, she served as dean of admissions and assistant professor of philosophy and humanities at Reed College and as assistant dean of the faculty and instructor in philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania.
She served for many years as a member of the Advisory Board of the Belin-Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Iowa College of Education. She also had memberships in the National Association for College Admissions Counseling and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Ann will be remembered by her colleagues as a thoughtful, creative professional and as an effective, empathetic leader of the large, diverse staff in the ACT Operations Division.
Besides travel and being with her family and friends, two of Ann's personal interests were her award-winning orchids and her much-loved Japanese bobtail cats, Suki and Yoko.
Ann is survived by her sister, Valerie (Larry) Peifer of Manheim, Pa.; two nieces, Lynn (Ryan) Scalise of Latrobe, Pa., and Lisa Marie Peifer of Portland, Ore.; and her great-niece, Nina Grace Scalise.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents.
