Shain, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert 'Bob' G.
Lt. Col. (Ret.) Robert “Bob” G. Shain passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012, at Doylestown Hospital in Doylestown, Pa., surrounded by his family. His family will receive friends at the Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home, 344 North Main St., Doylestown, PA 18901 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 9. A service will follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial and funeral honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Born in Iowa City, Iowa, on Dec. 2, 1934, Bob was a 1959 graduate of the Military Academy at West Point. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years as an infantry officer as well as a fixed-wing and helicopter pilot. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and was awarded the Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying crosses, two Bronze Stars, 27 Air Medals with V for valor, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnamese Medal of Honor and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He served as commander of the Executive Flight Detachment and pilot of Presidents Nixon and Ford's helicopter, Army One, from 1973 to 1976. Following his retirement he enjoyed a long professional career in the aeronautics industry.
Bob was an active supporter of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Military Officers Association. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sherry; three children, Cynthia Shain (Dave Hemminger), Stephanie Shain (Adam Roberts) and Michael Shain. He is and always will be the adored Papa of Bella, Jason and Mia. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Nancy Shain; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. EK Shain; and an older brother, Air Force Major E. Rox Shain.
