Greif, Robert J.
Robert J. Greif, 83, of rural Monticello, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a lengthy illness. Friends may visit from 2 until 8 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with burial in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Castle Grove. Officiating will be the Rev. Keith Birch and the Rev. Neil Manternach.
Robert was born June 8, 1928, in Hopkinton, Iowa, the son of Emil and Josephine (Gudenkauf) Greif. He married Alvina Manternach on June 14, 1950, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade.
Robert and Alvina farmed for 40 years in the Prairieburg, Lamont, and Castle Grove area. After retirement they spent time together traveling to several foreign countries. Robert loved to tinker in his shop and could repair almost anything.
Survivors include Alvina, his wife of 61 years; a daughter, Barbara (Keith) Kuhlengel of Palmyra, Pa.; two sons, Donald (Deann) of Chico, Calif., and Roger (Beth) of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Adrienne Kuhlengel of Lancaster, Pa., Trevor Kuhlengel of Palmyra, Pa., Ryan (Lisa) Greif of Davis, Calif., Marcus Greif of Reno, Nev., and Lainie Greif of Chico, Calif.; two stepgrandchildren, Jeremiah Burhite of Des Moines and Joshua Burhite of Ames; and a great-grandchild, Alexa Greif of Davis, Calif.
Robert is also survived by two sisters, Teresa (Dick) Stevens of Cedar Rapids and Jeanette (Duane) Freese of Monticello; five brothers, Joe (Jean) Greif of Coggon, Earl (Velda) Greif of Coal Valley, Ill., Fay (Lois) Greif of Coggon, Arnold (Betty) Greif of Central City and Louis (Marcy) Greif of Cedar Rapids; two sisters -in-law, Elodie Greif of Cedar Rapids and Rita Greif of Marion; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David in 2009; and two brothers, John and Loras Greif.
Memorials are preferred to the Monticello Ambulance Service.
