Hauer, Evelyn
Evelyn Hauer, 98, of Cedar Rapids, passed peacefully after a long and prosperous life on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Funeral services will be held in Hummelstown, Pa., at a later date. Evelyn will be laid to rest with her husband, Harold, in the Hummelstown Cemetery. A private service for the family was held at Teahen Funeral Home.
Survivors include a son, Tom (Toni) of Cedar Rapids; granddaughter, Heather (Dave) Boyle of Hummelstown, Pa.; grandson Andrew (Reagan) Hauer of Lancaster, Pa.; great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Alexis Boyle and Zoe Hauer; sister, Charlotte E. Sowers of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, William R. Sowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold (1994).
Evelyn Moore Sowers Hauer was born Dec. 4, 1913, in Gettysburg, Pa., the daughter of William and Ellen Moore Sowers. She obtained her degree from Shippensburg State Teachers College (now Shippensburg University) in Shippensburg, Pa., in 1933 and was granted her teaching certificate by the State of Pennsylvania. She taught elementary math and English at Hummelstown Elementary School. She married Abraham “Harold” Hauer on Nov. 9, 1944, in New York City. Together with her father-in-law, Herman E. Hauer, they owned and operated Hauer's Department Store in Hummelstown, Pa., for many years.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hiawatha Care Center and Promise House for their loving care of Mom over the last several years of her life.
