Walsh, The Rev. John Joseph
The Rev. John Joseph Walsh, 83, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Archbishop Michael Jackels. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A rosary will be recited at 9 a.m. on Monday followed by a visitation at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is serving the family.
Father is survived by his two sisters, Mary (Ted) Rahe of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Margaret Walsh of San Francisco, Calif.; two brothers, Michael (Kay) Walsh of Surprise, Ariz., and Denis (Judy) Walsh of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Walsh McHugh.
John Joseph was born March 18, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, the son of John and Mary Burke Walsh. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Cedar Rapids and received a Bachelor of Science degree in philosophy from Marquette University in Milwaukee. He received his theological training at Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque and was ordained on Feb. 2, 1957, at St. Raphael Cathedral, Dubuque, by the Most Rev. Leo Binz.
Father Walsh served as associate pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Dubuque, from 1957 to 1962; St. Mary Parish, Marshalltown, from 1962 to 1968; St. Joseph Parish, Dubuque, from 1968 to 1971; and St. Matthew Parish, Cedar Rapids, from 1971 to 1972. He served as administrator of St. Joseph Parish, Mason City, and a member of the team ministry from 1972 to 1974. Father Walsh served as pastor of St. Michael Parish, Garber, and Sacred Heart Parish, Littleport, from 1974 to 1976; St. Mary Parish, Manchester, from 1976 to 1986; St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Dubuque, from 1986 to 1994; St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Webster City, from 1994 to 2000; and St. John Parish, Blairstown, St. Paul Parish, Newhall, and Immaculate Conception Parish, Van Horne, from 2000 to 2003. Father Walsh retired in 2003 and served as chaplain at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.
