Joseph C. Sindelar, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a courageous battle with cancer. Per Joe's request there will be no visitation or service as he generously donated his body to the University of Iowa for research. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Joe volunteered for military service in January 1951. He served overseas for 31 months in Korea and Japan and he was honorably discharged in February 1954, with the rank of sergeant. While serving in Japan he married Jasuyo Yoshimura. They were later divorced.

Joe belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles Cedar Rapids Aerie2272 for 50 years. During that time he was elected to eight consecutive three-year terms. As secretary and manager, he held that office until he retired June 1, 1996. He was so proud of that. He later worked as the maintenance man for 15 years at the Budget Inn.
He was a member of the Eagles, Moose and VFW. He enjoyed gardening, and feeding the birds, squirrels and rabbits in his backyard. He was also a faithful supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.
