Evelyn E. Mayer, 86, of Chelsea, passed away Monday, April 3, 2017, at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Chelsea, with Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelsea. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the family.

Evelyn was born Nov. 7, 1930, the daughter of George and Marie (Dolash) Hlas. She attended Chelsea school. Following school, she worked as a waitress and a nanny in Tama. After World War II, Evelyn met Ludvik Mayer; the two were married March 28, 1951. Together they lived in Chelsea, where Evelyn was a housewife until the 1980s, when she went to work for Benco, where she worked for nearly 10 years.
She loved jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles, playing cards and collecting owls. Evelyn enjoyed watching game shows. In her early years, she loved gardening and bird watching. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Rosemary (Denny) Gorsch of Tama; grandchildren, Jenny, Jon, Laura, Rob, Sheila, Chuck and Patty; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Ed Hlas; sister, Eleanor Van Nevel and Sister Mary Hlas; sister-in-law, Velma Hlas; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ludvik Mayer; daughter, Veronica Lyon; sister, Elsie Klenk; and brothers, Elmer Hlas and Ernie Hlas.
