MOUNT VERNON — A toss-up on paper, this was a mismatch on Field Turf.
Seventh-ranked Mount Vernon scored on its first six possessions and routed Dyersville Beckman, 41-14, in a Class 2A first-round playoff football game Wednesday night at Ash Park.
The Mustangs racked up 360 yards of offense and collected 17 first downs before intermission on their way to a 41-0 halftime lead.
Mount Vernon (8-2) advances to the second round Monday against an opponent to be determined.
The Mustangs marched 71 yards for a touchdown on the first possession of the night, capping it with a 23-yard touchdown by Sam Moore. Drew Adams connected with Jack Cochrane for a 14-yard touchdown pass, and it was 14-0 after one quarter.
Four different Mustangs found the end zone in the second quarter, highlighted by an 80-yard pass from Adams to Connor Herrmann. Mount Vernon was effective both running (189 yards) and passing (171 yards) in the first half.
The final yardage margin was 404-191. Adams completed 13 of 21 passes for 190 yards; Herrmann caught six passes for 129 yards. Moore ran for 93 yards, Cochrane 89.
Beckman retired at 6-4.
