Glenna Cobb
GLENNA L. COBB
Iowa City
Glenna L. Cobb, 87, died peacefully on Thanksgiving Day 2015, her favorite holiday, surrounded by family. A memorial service to celebrate Glenna's life will be held 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Congregational United Church of Christ, 30 North Clinton St., Iowa City. The Rev. William Lovin will officiate. The family will greet friends after 2 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Congregational Church or Mercy Hospital Foundation.
Glenna was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Knoxville, Iowa, the fifth of eight children to Elzy and Leona Rankin Monroe. She attended rural school in Marion County and was a 1946 graduate of Knoxville High School. In 1949, Glenna received her RN degree from Iowa Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She met Stanley Cobb when they were both working at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City in the early 1950s. They married Sept. 25, 1954. Glenna worked as a floor nurse at Mercy Iowa City until Stan's death in 1970. Stan was a music teacher and conductor at City High School.
After Stan's death, Glenna became a school nurse for the Iowa City Community School District until 1982, so she could keep the same schedule as her children. She finished her nursing career at the Solon Care Center and Oaknoll Retirement Residence, re-tiring in 1994.
She remained active in later life as a member of the Congregational Church, Music Study Club, Mercy Guild, University Club and as a charter member of the Hoover School Alums, and was a lifetime member of the NEA.
In addition, she truly enjoyed her time volunteering as a patient simulator instructor at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, as well as enjoying long walks and any kind of music. Above all, love of family was paramount in her life.
Glenna is survived by her two children, Stu (Deb) Cobb of Iowa City and Jenny (Tom) Castle of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Valerie (Bryce) Schroder of Fort Collins, Colo., Bryan (Kate) Cobb of Iowa City, Tommy (Alice) Castle of West Des Moines and Ben Castle of Berkeley, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Kayla and Anthony; her brother, Hoyt Monroe of Jefferson; and her beloved cat, Molly.
Glenna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley; and six siblings, Lucile, Lorraine, Willie, Wanda, Dwight and Marilyn.
