Beverly Anne Gales of Cedar Rapids died Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Meth-Wick Manor/The Meth-Wick Community following a brief illness. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be a time of memories and sharing at 5 p.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family following until 8 p.m. Friends may also visit with the family after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Beverly is survived by her husband, John "Jack"; daughter, Susan Gales (Russ) Smoke of Palmetto, Fla.; two sons, John W. (Christie Morris) Gales and Jim (Keri Hayen) Gales, both of Cedar Rapids; brother, Bill (Eileen) Bolster of Naples, Fla.; sister, Mary Catherine Bolster of New York, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, John David Gales, Nichole Siena Miller, Mary Kathryn Gales, Clark Bolster Miller, Meghan Elizabeth Miller, Alexis Mae Gales and Gavin John Gales; great-grandchild, Mackenzie Beverly Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two granddaughters, Heather Marie and Sara Ann Gales.
Beverly Anne was born Jan. 23, 1939, in Waterloo, the daughter of William and Mildred (Lawrence) Bolster. Though a lifelong learner, Beverly attended Maryville College in St. Louis, Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, and graduated from Coe College with honors and a bachelor's degree in English. She married John "Jack" Raphael Gales on June 20, 1959, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waterloo.
For over 20 years, she was employed as a director of religious education with the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
Beverly was involved with Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality Center and enjoyed reading and writing. She enjoyed attending the University of Iowa's writing festival.
