John "Jack" Raphael Gales, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.
John "Jack" is survived by his daughter, Susan Gales (Russ) Smoke of Palmetto, Fla; two sons, John W. (Christie Morris) Gales and Jim (Keri Hayen) Gales, both of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, John David Gales, Nichole Siena Miller, Mary Kathryn Short, Clark Bolster Miller, Meghan Elizabeth Miller, Alexis Mae Gales and Gavin John Gales; two great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Beverly and Joshua Conrad Miller; brother, Rick Rewerts; sister, Dianne Rewerts LaJoie; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Bolster; sister, JoAnne Wendt Winters; brother, Jim Wendt; and two granddaughters, Heather Marie and Sara Anne Gales.
John "Jack" Raphael was born Dec. 9, 1936, in Gilbertville, the son of Ray and Mary Gales. He graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy and then joined the Marine Corps. Jack married Beverly Anne Bolster on June 20, 1959, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waterloo. He worked at Iowa Electric for 38 years, retiring in 1996. He also was a meditator for the 6th Judicial District Court of Iowa for many years.
Jack and Beverly were charter members of St. Jude Catholic Church.
He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Jack enjoyed fishing, gardening his roses, barbecuing and traveling with Beverly. He was an avid Green Bay Packers and Notre Dame football fan.
