CEDAR RAPIDS – A 16-year-old boy assaulted two police officers and threatened to kill them when he tried to escape a Cedar Rapids residential facility, police said.
Officers were dispatched around 2 p.m. Thursday to Tanager Place, 2309 C St. SW, for a resident that was running away from staff. The officers spotted Dan Olney, of Iowa City, and told him to stop.
Olney immediately turned and tried to punch Officer Roger Elder, and then grabbed his uniform and kneed him in the waist, Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said. Elder and Officer Matthew Martin managed to get Olney to the ground, but Olney continued to fight and struck Martin in the head, police said.
Three staff members helped the officers put handcuffs on Olney. As he was being put into a squad car, Olney kicked Elder in the face, according to the police report. He continued to yell and threatened to kill police, Hamblin said.
Elder suffered a swollen lip and cuts to the inside of his mouth, but was not transported to a hospital. Martin was not hurt.
Olney was taken to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center on three counts of assault on a peace officer.
