Black, Helen M.
Helen M. Black, 90, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at the Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 27, 2010, in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends and family will gather at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Feb. 27.
She is survived by a sister, Gladys Sturm; a brother, Richard Havlik and wife Alicia; nieces; nephews; grandnieces and nephews; great-grandnieces and nephews; several cousins; and many nice friends.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Laverne Havlik; and her husband of 56 years, Robert Black; and their pets Tiger, Ty and Bootsie.
Helen was born on June 1, 1919, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Hillmer) Havlik in Cedar Rapids.
She worked at Penick and Ford for seven years and Cherry Burrell for 15 years. During World War II, she was an assembler at Iowa Steel and Iron Works and a Red Cross volunteer nurse at St. Luke's Hospital. Helen was a member of First Lutheran Church for over 50 years.
She and Bob enjoyed their cabin along the Wapsi for 32 years and camping in their trailer. She loved fishing, outdoor and bowling, winning a 600 local tournament.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
