MAZIE A. BYE
Cedar Rapids
Mazie A. Bye, 84, of Cedar Rapids, transitioned to her heavenly home on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Mazie was born Dec. 7, 1931, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Bud and Martha Fischer. She was married to Don Bye on Sept. 10, 1949. They had two daughters, Lynn and Cindy. In 1996, she began sharing her life with her significant other, Rodney Vasconcellos, by whom she is survived.
She is survived by her two daughters, Lynn Maas (Bill) of Marshalltown and Cindy Staton of Hiawatha; two grandchildren, Chris Moore and Lisa Blevins (Steve); and two great-granddaughters, Micah and Lydia, all of Marshalltown; half brother, Mark Fischer (Kelly) of Cedar Rapids; half sister, Ann Horner (Dave) of Vinton; Rod's son, Dan Vasconcellos (Karen) of Virginia; and daughter, Nancy Kerbaugh (Dave) of Florida.
Mazie was preceded in death by her parents, Bud and Martha Fischer; stepmother, Myra Fischer; her husband, Don Bye; and Rod's daughter, Diane Lind.
She was a faithful member of Eden United Church of Christ for over 62 years until its closing. She participated in a Bible study for over 42 years and was devoted to her "Walk to Emmaus" reunion group for many years.
Mazie was very active in a Silver Sneakers exercise group and loved the friends and fellowship that grew out of that. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor and her joy filled welcoming spirit to all. She loved spending time with her family, crocheting, playing games and working sudoku and crossword puzzles.
During her short term illness, she was gifted with grace-filled time to realize how loved she was and the legacy of love and friendship that she leaves with each of us. She has touched many lives and the fingerprints that she leaves on our hearts are eternal.
In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to Hospice of Mercy and the Four Oaks Partnership for Safe Families Program.
