Feiereisen, Michael D.

Mike was born January 23, 1919, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Charles and Ida Belle (O'Ragan) Feiereisen. Mike attended Tyler Elementary, McKinley Junior High, Washington and McKinley High Schools.

Mike left high school in the 12th grade to join the United States Navy. He went to boot camp at Great Lakes, Mich. After boot camp Mike was assigned to the USS Lexington. The Lexington was an aircraft carrier which took part in the search for Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fredrick Noonan. Mike was a cook on the Lexington during the search, but no trace was ever found of Earhart and Noonan or their aircraft. The search covered over 200,000 square miles and encompassed 11 days. Mike remained a life member of the USS Lexington Reunion Group. At a later date aboard a different ship while at war with Japan, Mike asked Captain McVeigh what was the final disposition of Earhart. The only answer was that we took an awful lot of pictures. Mike left the Navy in June of 1945 as a Chief Commissary Petty Officer (CPO) and returned to Cedar Rapids. He married Arlene Helen Myers on July 8, 1945. Mike retired from Kings Concrete after 32 years.
