John Anthony Pokorny, 74, of Clutier, died Monday, May 19, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.
He was born March 7, 1940, in Clutier, the son of John M. and Tillie Chizek Pokorny. He was a 1958 graduate of Clutier High School. He married Linda Cross on Sept. 2, 1961, at the Immaculate Conception Church in Clutier. She preceded him in death in October 1992.
He farmed, was a meat cutter at Eagle's in Marshalltown, worked at Swift Packing, Van's Locker in Dysart and Wieck Brother's Oil Co. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Bohemian Mutual Insurance board and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
Survived by four children, Barbara (Curtis) Kopriva of Traer, Bruce (Sue) Pokorny of Atkins, Stewart (Heather Ball) Pokorny of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary (Adam) Masten of Van Horne; 10 grandchildren, Jacob, Zachary, Abigail and Gabriel Kopriva, Brittny Pokorny, Helen Pokorny, Ashley, Brianna, Ellie and Elizabeth Masten; three brothers, Norman (Carolyn) Pokorny of Venice, Fla., Alvin (Pat) Pokorny of Creston and Robert (Julie) Pokorny of Zimmerman, Minn.; sister-in-law, Ardene Cross of Clutier; and a brother-in-law, Daryl (Linda) Cross of Whitten.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother-in-law, Dwight Cross.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer with burial in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church where there will be a 7:30 p.m. vigil service. Visitation will also be held one hour before the service at the church.
