Klein, Melvin C.
Melvin C. Klein, 93, of Stanwood, died Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Prairie Hills Assisted Living, Tipton, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, St. John's United Church of Christ, Clarence, by the Rev. David Mears. Burial: St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chapman Funeral Home, Clarence.
Survivors include his son, William(Robyn) of Kalona; daughter, Melanie(Leroy)an Roekel of Wilton and Brenda Klein of Wellman; granddaughter, Ashley Klein of Hiawatha; grandsons, Jason(Kim)Van Roekel of Indianapolis,Ind., Mark(Kelsie)Van Roekel of West Lafayette,Ind., Adam Klein of Ames; great-grandson, Nikolas Van Roekel of Indianapolis,Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Katricia; a brother, Arnold Klein; and a sister, Alma Christiansen.
He was born July 29,1918, to Williams and Anna Hasenbank Klein on the family farm in Stanwood,Iowa, where he lived for 92 years. On March 2,1946, he married Agnes Petersen at the Lutheran Church in Wyoming,Iowa. Together they farmed near Stanwood with their family. She died in 2003.
Melvin was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ where he was a former church council member and also served on the board of directors for the Clarence Coop. Melvin had a passion for farming and especially enjoyed raising cattle and sheep. He also enjoyed horses and had been amember of the Cedar County Saddle Club and White Horse Club, along with still being able to drive tractors as recently as last summer.
Melvin and Agnes were also members of the ARC and were instrumental in starting the special education school in Cedar County. Melvin enjoyed watching the Cubs and spending time with his family.
