Martha Ida Cohrt, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at the Ed and Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit in St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with Pastor Steven Rempfer officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Newhall.
Martha was born April 12, 1929, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Fritz and Ida Walter Furler. She grew up and attended school in Blairstown.
On July 4, 1948, she married Edward Cohrt in Blairstown. They later divorced.
Martha worked as a cook and waitress at the Van Horne bowling alley and in several restaurants in Benton County. She enjoyed sports, bowling and playing cards with friends. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall.
Martha is survived by her daughters, Joyce Thompson of Ellsworth, Wis., and Janet (Joe) Cohrt of Beloit, Wis.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Walton Cohrt of Shellsburg; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sons, Terry, Gary and Michael Cohrt, four brothers and four sisters.
A memorial fund has been established.
