Richard "Dick" Rowray, 97, son of Maynard and Bessie Mae Rowray, passed away quietly at his home on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, with his wife, Wanda, by his side. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. A private family service will be held Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A livestream link may be viewed client.tribucast.com/tcid/50744206 at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8. As mandated by proclamation, social distancing must be practiced, which requires a limited number of people to be allowed into the visitation at one time. The use of face masks or shields is required.
He was born June 5, 1923, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He attended Edgewood School and graduated in 1941 from Roosevelt High School. He was on the tumbling team and played baseball for four teams. In 1942, he delivered milk for Davis Dairy with a horsedrawn wagon and worked with his father and brother on their moving truck. In 1945, he married Augusta "Gussie" Kohl. He retired from Chicago Northwestern Railroad after 40 years of service. Dick was a man of faith, who taught an adult Bible class for 40 years at Edgewood Baptist Church. Dick was an avid golfer and bowler. He loved gardening and carving. He was a gentle, quiet man, who never said anything bad about anyone.
He and Gussie had a daughter, Marsha; a son, Rickie, who was deaf; and a son, Dan.
On Oct. 2, 2002, Dick married Wanda Brandt. They spent 16 years wintering in Mission, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Rowray; son, Dan Rowray; siblings, Bessie Mae McCright, Jack Rowray, Shirely Wiggins and Lora Crawford; grandchildren, Danette (Troy) Jensen, Randy (Jen) Rowray, Darcy Hilton (Ron), DeeDee Rojas-Neira, Robina (Miles) McDaniel, Kenard Brandt, Wanette (Lee) Mollenhauer, Shawn (Lisa) Brandt and Angie Brandt; great-grandchildren, Miranda, Spencer, Jared, Ryann, Rilee, Sophia, CJ, Ben, Nate, Brooklyn, Angela, Megan, Christie, Annie, Weston, Gentry, Chase, Tanner, Kendra, Landon, Arys, Dell, Rylan, Rosemary and Ariella; great-great-grandson, Lane; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marsha; and son, Rickie; his first wife, Gussie, in 1991; brothers, Maynard, Norman, Lloyd and Vic; and sisters, Linda, Mary Louise, Myrtle "Bub" and Susie.
