Marilyn Jean (Conklin) Irvin was born Dec. 28, 1927, in West Liberty, Iowa, to Clarence and Marguerite (Schenkel) Conklin. The family moved to Iowa City, where she graduated from City High School in 1946. In 1948, she was united in marriage to Ralph W. Irvin. They had five sons. She was a housewife for most of her life but she did find time to work for the phone company, the University of Iowa food service, Golden Corral and Petersen's Beauty Salon. She also took great pride in volunteering at the VA Hospital chapel for many years. She loved her daily visits to God through reading Scriptures. She loved to feed and watch the birds and squirrels outside her windows. She liked to garden. She enjoyed any time she got to visit with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children, Dale Irvin (Dave Johnson) of Wilton Manors, Fla., Dick Irvin (Deb) of Iowa City, Dave Irvin of Iowa City, Dan Irvin (Jill) of Coralville and Dennis Irvin (Donna McCullough) of Des Moines; and grandchildren. Jennifer Waldhelm (Andy) of Mobile, Ala., Meredith Wells (Damon) of Austin, Texas, Mark Irvin (Laura) of Cedar Rapids, Stephanie Irvin of Iowa City, Chris Irvin of Iowa City, Kathy Irvin of Columbus, Ohio, and Lisa Christman (Jacob) of Fort Wayne, Ind. Also surviving her are great-grandchildren, Austin Waldhelm, Cole Waldhelm, Rashad Dixon, Jonathan Irvin, Sebastian Young, Daphne Young and Oliver Christman; and many nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; her three siblings, Laurene Sybil, Clarence Conklin Jr. and Shirley Rembold; and her former husband, Ralph Irvin.
Marilyn's family would like to thank the staff at UI Hospitals and Hospice Compassus for their compassionate and professional care.
