Owen, Raymond
Raymond Owen, 81, of Iowa City, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Iowa City, with Pastor David Aanonson officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 325 Mormon Trek Blvd., Iowa City. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.
Ray was born July 10, 1929, in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Ethel Davis Owen. Ray was a 1957 graduate of the College of Commerce at the University of Iowa and served his country as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska. On March 9, 1952, Ray married Colleen Walker in Centerville. Colleen died May 19, 2010.
Ray was employed for 34 years as an accountant in the business office with the University of Iowa. For 22 years Ray was the head accountant. Following retirement he worked security at UI athletic events and was a greeter at Walmart.
Ray and his wife were charter members of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where he had served on the church council and as church treasurer. The church was an integral part of their lives. Ray was a member of the Coralville Optimists Club and was an avid supporter of the University of Iowa and Hawkeye athletics.
Ray had a strong work ethic and was a dedicated and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Ray is survived by his two sons and six grandchildren, Mike (Cynthia) Owen of Iowa City, and their children, Molissa of Shelbyville, Ind., and Christopher and Emily, both of Iowa City; and Mark (Amy) Owen of North Liberty, and their children, Abbey, Benjamin and Ryan, all of North Liberty; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother, Ronald.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Christ the King Lutheran Church for its 50th anniversary.
