The past year has been the second most expensive for crude oil in history behind 2008, the state energy office reported.
The price of crude oil has already outstripped levels predicted in the federal government's last short-term energy forecast. The Energy Information Administration on Dec. 11 forecast that oil prices would average $84 per barrel from October through March, and would reach $89 per barrel by the end of 2011.

The rise in diesel prices has been even more rapid over the past year, averaging about 20 percent. The Oil Price Information Service reports diesel prices averaged $3.29 per gallon in Iowa on Friday, up from $2.75 a year ago.
The average trading price of natural gas on Dec. 28 was $4.11 per decatherm 41.3 percent lower than a year ago.
