Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker speaks during a news conference, Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, in Iowa City, Iowa. Parker announced he will retire after Iowa's Insight Bowl college football game against Oklahoma scheduled for Dec. 30. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)
I wished Norm Parker the best in his retirement after the news conference. I know he loves golf, a game that has changed quite a bit for him without about half of his right leg.
He's still going to give it a go. He also has a lake home in Michigan, his home state. He can catch northern and walleye from the end of his dock.
He also plans to stay in Iowa City, sort of the home he found at the end of 46 seasons of coaching.
I've enjoyed and appreciated my interactions with Norm over the years. Totally engaging human being, comfortable in his skin and completely self-actualized. He blows through his vulnerabilities like they're not even there.
Norm talked about how the game has changed. It has and coaches have along with it. When he was allowed to speak, Norm never talked around anything. He might be the last of that breed.
Here's to 40-inch northerns and good 18-inch or so eater walleyes!
