Dickinson, Donald D.
Donald D. Dickinson, 88, of Washington, formerly of Brighton, died late Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at the McCreedy Home in Washington from an extended illness.
Don was born in Brighton on May 3, 1925, to Gail James and Veva Ruth (Keegan) Dickinson. He grew up in Brighton and graduated from Pleasant Plain High School in 1944. Don married Alice Statler in Brighton on March 10, 1951. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was active in his community as a longtime member of the Brighton United Church and member of the Brighton Volunteer Fire Department. Don worked for the telephone company for 32 years, retiring in 1987.
He and Alice moved to Washington in April 2010 and to the McCreedy Home in August 2011 where he quickly made many friends and began caring for the flower beds at the home.
Family was very important to Don and he enjoyed attending many activities for his children and especially his grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife, Alice, of 62 years; son, Terry (Donna) Dickinson of Plymouth, Minn.; daughter, Diane (Mark) Sheets of Keota; four grandchildren, Tyler Sheets of Keota, Erin Sheets of Coralville and Katie and Jack Dickinson of Plymouth, Minn.; one brother, Ralph “Dubs” (Kathryn) Dickinson, and one sister, Jane (Russel) Whitaker, both of Brighton; and many nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Brighton United Church in Brighton, with the Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton. Visitation at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, with the family present to greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials for the Brighton United Church and the McCreedy Home may be left at the funeral home, church or mailed to the funeral home at PO Box 149, Brighton, IA 52540.
