Bascom, Jessie 'Glenn'
Jessie “Glenn” Bascom, 93, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Phillips Family Center (605 Second Ave.) in Vinton, with Pastor Ed Kraft officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg, with graveside military rites conducted by Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post 166 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Friends may call at the Family Center from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
“Glenn” was born March 16, 1919, in Chandler, Okla., to Charles and Alice (Jett) Bascom. On Sept. 20, 1939, he married Myrtle “Lucille” Lint in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death on June 5, 1990. On Nov. 27, 1991, he married Emiline Zimmerman Gould in Vinton and she preceded him in death on March 4, 2001.
“Glenn” was a self-employed plumber before his retirement. In his leisure he enjoyed fishing and camping.
He is survived by his daughter, Sue (Tom) Harrelson of Shellsburg; his stepdaughter, Genevieve (Fred) Martin of Oelwein; his son-in-law, Marvin Mettler of Arnolds Park; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Judy Howe and Karen Mettler; his great-granddaughter, Morgan Rose Harrelson; his two brothers, Edgar and Edward Bascom; and his sisters, Dorothy Boyles and Lucybell St. Clair.
A memorial fund has been established.
