Glenn Subra
GLEN SUBRA
Marion
After several years struggling with Alzheimer's, Glen Subra met Jesus his Savior face-to-face on Feb. 25, 2018, with a crystal clear mind. He was 81.
Born on a farm on Dec. 23, 1936, to Everett and Lucy (Yarwood) Subra, Glen grew up working with livestock and in the field, which gave him some of his fondest lifelong memories. Glen attended a rural one-room schoolhouse and graduated from high school in Plainview, Minn. After completing a one-year agriculture program at the University of Minnesota, he joined the U.S. Army in 1956. He trained as a radio operator, and then spent a year and a half in Germany, traveling parts of Europe while there.
In 1958, he married his farm girl, one-room schoolhouse sweetheart, Ardyce Schake. God blessed them with five children. During their life together, they lived in Fairfield, Waterloo, Fort Huachuca (Arizona), Fort Dodge, Cedar Rapids and Marion. Glen worked in finance and as a bank loan officer, and eventually became a small-business owner until his retirement. Glen more recently relocated to Des Moines, where he could be near two of his sons.
Glen enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, working on rental houses and serving the Lord in his local church. His greatest joy was singing hymns in harmony. He was generous with smiles and was easily found by listening for his laughter.
Glen was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter, Sandra; two sisters, Irene Thompson and Violet Bicknese; and a brother, Roger.
Glen is survived by four children, Jeff (Cherie) Subra of Bristol, Tenn., Kevin (Jane) Subra of Des Moines, Kurt (Jenny) Subra of Polk City and Renee Krepfle of Greenville, S.C.; 25 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Doris Callahan, LaVonne Hermann, Lila Parker and Lorraine Monahan; and brother, Loren Subra.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Blair Ridge Baptist Church, 4502 Blairs Ferry Rd., Cedar Rapids, IA 52411. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 2, and at 10 a.m. Saturday at the same location. Interment: 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given in Glen's honor to Blair Ridge Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years.
