MARY CLEOTA CURRELL
West Bloomfield, Mich.
Mary Cleota Currell (nee Callahan) of West Bloomfield, Mich., was born June 30, 1935, in Van Horne, Iowa, to John M. and Wilma Dorothy (nee Schellhase) Callahan. She died Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at the age of 83.
Mrs. Currell is the beloved wife of 61 years to John F. Currell; loving mother of Cynthia (Ed Finn) Currell, Joseph (Debbie) Currell, Martha (Randy) Strang and Laura Elkin; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; dear sister of Jean (Jim) Kazimour and Larry (Toni) Callahan; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Mrs. Currell was a first-grade teacher for 22 years and reached over 700 children. In addition, she taught religious education for over 45 years. She was a very avid reader and a strong supporter of the West Bloomfield Library, where she introduced her children and grandchildren to a love of reading. She and her husband enjoyed the symphony, and together they were longtime supporters of many symphony orchestras. Together with her husband, they enjoyed entertaining in their home, especially their St. Patrick's Day celebration. She was a devoted nanny to her grandchildren, Kevin and David. She loved to keep in touch with and write letters to many of her friends that she met throughout her lifetime. In her later years, she enjoyed watching the woods and listening to the birds with her high school sweetheart and husband of 61 years, Jack.
Funeral Mass is Monday at 10 a.m. (in state at 9:30 a.m.) at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, 3750 Commerce Rd., West Bloomfield (west of Orchard Lake Road). Friends may visit Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 340 N. Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake (three blocks south of Maple Road) on Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. (rosary at 7 p.m.).
Memorials to the Alzheimer's Association. Memorial donations also accepted (payable to John F. Corell) for the Mary Callahan Currell Scholarship at Mount Mercy University, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
