RICHARD GENE CALLAHAN
Coralville
Richard Gene Callahan, lifelong resident of Iowa City and Coralville, passed away Dec. 12, 2018, at the Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County at age 92.
Honoring his wishes, there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to the Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County, P.O. Box 3338, Iowa City, IA 52244.
Richard Callahan was born on Aug. 13, 1926, in Iowa City to James M. and Ella G. (Christie) Callahan. He attended St. Patrick's High School before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Richard married Shirley Ann Stuckey on June 7, 1952, in Iowa City, where they raised their four children.
He was employed at the University of Iowa Physical Plant for 41 years, retiring in 1988 as the paint and glass shop manager.
He loved gardening, bowling, reading, golfing and traveling with his wife, Shirley. Above all, Richard loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and was considered a diehard fan. He also was a member of the VFW of Iowa City.
Richard is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Janice (James) Barnes, Teresa (Merrill) Hamilton, Kevin Callahan and David Callahan; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jack, James and Donald Callahan; and one sister, Bonnie Denninger.
We especially wish to express our gratitude to all of our friends at the Bird House Hospice Home of Johnson County who lovingly cared for our family.
