Anderl, Georg Peter
Georg Peter Anderl, 53, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, in Wilmington, N.C. While jogging, Georg was struck by a sport utility vehicle after the driver lost control of the vehicle. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Memorial services celebrating Georg's exceptional life will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
Georg is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Kathy; sons, Michael and Patrick, both currently attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison; parents, Josef and Gisela Anderl of Colts Neck, N.J.; brother, Ewald (Mary Anne) Anderl of Middletown, N.J.; sister, Ursula (Paul) Ahern of Grayslake, Ill.; mother-in-law, Nancy Dawson of Crystal Lake, Ill.; and several nephews and nieces.
Georg was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and father-in-law, David Dawson.
Georg was born at home on Oct. 11, 1958, in Eatontown, N.J., the son of Josef and Gisela (Dworschak) Anderl. On May 30, 1981, he married Kathleen Dawson in Crystal Lake, Ill. Georg graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Illinois, Champaign, Ill., with a degree in chemical engineering.
Georg worked for Eastman Kodak, Rochester, N.Y., for 10 years before joining Genencor in Cedar Rapids in 1990. At Genencor, Georg was the engineering technology director before becoming general manager in 1997. In 2004, he was the director of market development before becoming the biorefinery director for Genencor Danisco in 2005 and vice president of engineering at Dupont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol in April 008. In May 2011, Georg became vice president of Renewable Energy Technologies for Chemtex USA, located in Wilmington, N.C.
Georg was active in the Iowa biotechnology industry, serving as co-founder and president of the Biosciences Industry Alliance of Iowa (BIOWA) and current board member for the Iowa Biotechnology Association (IBA) and past board member for the Bioscience Alliance of Iowa. Georg was also active in the Cedar Rapids community, previously serving on the boards of Priority One and Tanager Place and as president of the board of directors of the Science Station.
Georg was an extraordinary man who cherished his wife and sons. He lived for his family. Georg loved marathoning with Michael, camping with Patrick and traveling with Kathy. Running was the one activity Georg did for himself and it was common for the family to receive “Georg sightings” on Saturdays from friends who would spy Georg many miles from home.
Although Georg was taken from us too soon, we celebrate the years and the memories we shared with him. His vibrancy, energy, compassion, generosity, warmth and intelligence will long be remembered by all who knew and loved him. His spirit shines on through all of those who are better for having known him and most of all through his family, to whom Georg gave his unconditional love, support and guidance.
If as we're walking a hand should slip free, I'll wait for you. And should I fall behind, wait for me.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
