Engelhardt, Don E.
Don E. Engelhardt, 75, of Marion, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids, by Celebrant Julie Freese. Private interment: Wilcox Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Don is survived by his significant other, Jane Brokaw, and her children, Leslie (Larklyn) Brokaw, Angela (Darwin) McAtee, Sarah Rickels and Jennifer (Glenn) Bartley; special grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Carroll (Jo) Engelhardt of Moorehead, Minn.; and two special nieces, Kristen (Todd) Gerlach, and their twins, Gus and Cecelia and Oscar and Annalise, and Rachel Engelhardt.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don was born Dec. 8, 1935, to Curtis and Ruby Engelhardt in Strawberry Point, where his parents ran a Gamble Store. The family moved to a farm near Elkader in 1937. Don graduated from Elkader High School in 1952 and then worked for Farm Service until he joined the Army in 1955. After serving in the military, Don worked for Wilson Foods, later becoming a correctional officer for the State of Iowa at Oakdale from 1991 to 2001, when he retired. He has lived in Marion since 1965.
