Haines, Donald L.
Donald L. Haines, 70, of Marion, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, April 28, 2012, at his home. Celebration of Life: 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Paul Wilcox. Per Don's wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Mr. Haines was born on Oct. 19, 1941, in New York, N.Y. He was raised in Verona, N.J., until his college years. Don graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1965 and was in the ministry for several years before becoming a teacher. He attended Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. He married Karen Comstock on June 11, 1966, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Their son, Brian, was born in 1969. Don and Karen lived in Independence for 32 years, where he taught at the high school until his retirement. He was an active member of the Iowa High School Press Association and was elected to its Hall of Fame.
Surviving are his wife, Karen; his son, Brian (Michele); his sister, Janice; and two grandchildren, Connor and Kaitlyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Elmira Haines.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, 315 18th Ave., Hiawatha, IA, 52233, in Don's memory.
