Anita Marie Zahs, 35, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family at her childhood home north of Ainsworth on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Bernie Weir and Father Dennis Martin officiating. Calling hours will begin 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the St. James Catholic Church, where family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.
Memorials have been established for Simpson College Biology Department, the Environmental Protection Agency or Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Anita was born April 4, 1983, in Washington, the daughter of Donald and Nannette (Dawson) Zahs. She attended St. James Catholic School and graduated from Highland High School in 2001. Anita graduated magna cum laude from Simpson College in 2005. She received her doctorate from Loyola Medical School in Chicago, Ill.
Anita was employed for the past three years at St. Ambrose University in Davenport as a visiting assistant professor of biology. She was a member of Our Lady of Victory Parish in Davenport, Iowa, and enjoyed reading, biking and attending all of her nieces' and nephews' activities. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Blackhawks fan.
She is survived by her mother, Nannette Zahs of Ainsworth, Iowa; father, Donald Zahs and wife Sandie of Coralville, Iowa; brother, Anthony Zahs and wife Kari of Beaver Dam, Wis.; brother, Ben Zahs and wife Jill of Washington, Iowa; sister, Penny Danly and husband Brian of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; eight nieces and nephews, Elise and Brandyn Zahs, Emma, Lucas and Cooper Zahs, Kaiden Cuevas and Alex and Pyper Danly. She is also survived by her uncle, J. Christopher Dawson and wife Sharon of Disputanta, Va.; aunt, Margaret Hickman and husband Robert of Smithfield, Va.; uncle, Michael Zahs and wife Julie of Riverside, Iowa; aunt, Kathryn Johnson and husband Jim of Miles, Iowa; and aunt, Carolyn Dohrmann and husband Joel of DeWitt, Iowa.
Anita was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, James and Loretta Dawson; paternal grandparents, Dean and Elaine Zahs; and uncles, George Dawson and Roger Keil.
