Iowa adds 666 virus cases Thursday, seven deaths

Iowa added 666 new COVID-19 cases and seven new, confirmed deaths Thursday.

The new cases bring the state total to 355,326 and the number of confirmed deaths to 5,843, according to Iowa Department of Public Health data.

The state’s seven-day average for cases is 525 as of Thursday and the average for deaths is 13.

VACCINATIONS

As of Thursday afternoon, 683,548 Iowans are fully vaccinated, according to IDPH data. The number is equal to 27.23 percent of the 16 and older population in the state.

Overall, 711,748 people have been fully vaccinated in Iowa, just passing the 700,000 mark on Thursday. The number of total doses administered in the state is 1,748,225.

In Linn County, the total number of doses administered is 127,570 with 51,354 people fully vaccinated. That is 28.46 percent of the county’s 16 and older population.

In Johnson County, the total number of doses administered is 102,139 with 41,171 people fully vaccinated. That is 33.12 percent of the county’s 16 and older population.

NEW CASES

Linn County added 30 cases Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the county to 20,061. Linn’s seven-day average is 20.

Johnson County added 41 cases for a total of 13,774. The county’s seven-day average is 28.

Of the new cases statewide, 141 were children up to age 17, bringing the total of infected minors to 41,167.

CONFIRMED DEATHS

Of Thursday’s deaths, three were individuals age 81 and older, two were 61 to 80 years old and two were ages 41 to 60.

One death took place in December and six happened in March.

Hardin and Polk counties reported two of the deaths each and Jasper, Pottawattamie and Scott counties reported one death each.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

Across the state, virus hospitalizations increased from 216 to 219 in the 24-hour period ending at 11 a.m. Thursday. Patients in intensive care ticked down from 44 to 43 and the number of patients on ventilators dipped from 24 to 20.

LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES

Two long-term care facilities in Iowa still are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks — three or more cases among residents and staff — with 20 people ill.

To date, 2,287 people have died from the virus in Iowa’s care facilities since March 2020.
