Leona M. Harney, 89, of Wichita Falls, Texas, died July 20, 2017, at Texhoma Christian Care Center in Wichita Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 27, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Belger officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Leona was born April 24, 1928, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Vlasta (Konigsmark) Trachta. She grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Wilson High School in 1946. On Sept. 11, 1951, she married the love of her life, Francis A. Harney, at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She was a mother and homemaker, moving from Cedar Rapids to Texas in 1975. Francis preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 2003.
Francis and Leona enjoyed vacation time at their lake cabin in Hayward, Wis. After Francis' death, she continued to make trips to their lake home. Fascinated by all the beauty found in nature, Leona cherished her time outdoors. She enjoyed walks, fishing, seeing creatures in the northwoods and "wine time" on the shores of Big Round Lake. She was an avid sports fan, following high school, college and professional sports.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Joe) Williams of Archer City, Texas, and Diane (Vern) Wilson of Amarillo, Texas; a son, Raymond (Carrie) Harney of Rochester, Minn.; six grandchildren, Dana (Brent) Teske of Fitchburg, Wis., Lisa (Patrick) Lansdon of Iowa City, Laura Harney of Denver, Colo., Ben Harney of Fitchburg, Jim (Sabrina) Williams of Wichita Falls and Nick (Katie) Williams of Stephenville, Texas; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Robert Trachta.
