Hayes, Deacon Joseph D.
Deacon Joseph D. Hayes, 89, of Cascade, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, at 11:30 p.m. at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade. Friends and relatives of Joe may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may also call after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, where services for Joseph D. Hayes will be held at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Daniel Krapfl officiating. The Homily will be given by the Rev. Douglas Loecke. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade, with full military honors afforded by Cascade American Legion Post 528.
Joe was born June 3, 1921, in Cascade, Iowa, son of Cyril and Viola (Stanton) Hayes. He received his education in the Placid and St. Martin's grade and high school in Cascade. He also attended Loras College in Dubuque. Joe served in the United States Navy until his retirement. He then was employed as a postmaster for 20 years.
On Feb. 23, 1957, he was united in marriage to Agnese (Regan) Ripple. In 1989, he was ordained as a deacon.
He served in the Navy Fleet Reserves. He was a member of Cascade American Legion Post 528, retired volunteer of the Cascade fire Department, for which he served as chief, charter member of the Dubuque County Fire Association Hall of Fame, volunteer for the Red Cross for 35 years, and member of the Cascade Knights of Columbus Council 930.
He is survived by two children, Pat (Kathy) Hayes of Simpsonville, N.C., and Mary Ann (James) Reilly of Omaha, Neb.; three stepchildren, Craig (Kathy) Ripple of Eldridge, Mike Ripple of Des Moines and Roger (Julie) Ripple of Cascade; 17 grandchildren, Amy (Matt) Schermerhorn, Mark (Kari) Ripple, Reggie (Tina) Ripple, Kyle Ripple, Katie (Charles) Privett, Ryan Ripple, Tara Ripple, Aaron Ripple, Dawn (Jeremy) Freerks, Melissa Ripple, Jennifer McNamara, Jeremy Hayes, Jennifer Hayes, Brendan Reilly, Isaac Reilly, Keenan Reilly and Caitlyn Reilly; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sister Mary Anita Therese Hayes B.V.M. of Dubuque and Rita (Ronald) Rhoads of Lansing, Kan.; and one brother-in-law, Russal Streeper of Onslow.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Agnese Hayes on Nov. 21, 2008; one stepson, Ronald Ripple; three sisters, Mary Monica Hayes in infancy and Kathleen Myrick and Theresa Streeper; and one brother, James Lawrence Hayes in infancy.
