Arp, Gary Thomas
Gary Thomas Arp, 61, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. The family will greet friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. However, per Gary's wishes, there will be no formal services.
Survivors include his wife, Diane; son, Eric Arp (fiancee, Brooke Giddings) of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Elle Arp; sister, Mary (Steve) Burns of Marion; and nephews and niece, Brandon, Brion and Brook Fairbanks.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gary was born Nov. 11, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Dick and Ruth (Wickham) Arp. He attended Marion High School. Gary was an equipment operator for the Iowa Department of Transportation, retiring in 2010 after 22 years. He married Diane Sturtz on Aug. 8, 2008.
Gary enjoyed camping, woodworking, and NASCAR. He did commercial and residential painting with his dad, and participated in RAGBRAI several times.
Gary will be affectionately remembered as the “Grill Master” and he enjoyed helping with Billy's Chicken Shack.
He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandpa, and will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Gary's memory.
