ESTHER L. SCOTT
Strawberry Point
Esther Luella (Kramer) Scott, 92, of Strawberry Point, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at 12:05 p.m. at Regional Medical Center in Manchester.
She was born at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 1923, in a farm home northwest of Edgewood, known then as the Henery Bassett farm in Clayton County. The daughter of Carl and Lucy (Bassett) Kramer, Esther attended Kramer School No. 3 in Lodomilla Township for eight years. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School at age 16 in 1940. She continued to help with the farm work and clerked at Tegon's Dime Store. Esther then worked in Cedar Rapids at Collins Radio and Defense Plant during World War II. This work earned her the right to have her name on the World War II monument in Washington, D.C.
On Sept. 4, 1945, Esther was united in marriage to Alvin E. Scott at the Methodist Church in Strawberry Point upon his arrival home from war service in England for 2 1/2 years.
After three months in Florida, Alvin was discharged from service, then they both were employed in Manchester for 6 1/2 years. They moved to Strawberry Point in April and on May 1, 1952, their daughter, Linda Lou, was born.
Esther always enjoyed music from a very early age and would dance at the first sound of a tune. She sang in the choir and played the piano for church. Alvin and Esther took pleasure in going to Lawrence Welk's Big Band dances.
She liked nature and learned the names of flowers, trees and butterflies from her mother. Esther had a green thumb. She enjoyed sharing her violets with friends and family throughout the years.
Sewing, needlework, crafts, quilting, cake decorating, baking, and freezing and canning vegetables from their garden were some of her hobbies.
Esther had the privilege of driving her elderly parents on their yearly vacations. Later, she enjoyed visiting her daughter and family in Wyoming and Georgia. She looked forward to receiving postcards from around the world that family and friends would send.
At the age of 50, she learned how to swim and got her ears pierced. She had a fondness for dolls and had a five-generation doll collection.
Esther was a lifetime member of the Wilder Museum. She delighted in making hundreds of velvet strawberry bookmarks for the museum to sell.
Esther spent many, many hours in genealogy work. She and her niece, Kathleen, had a book published.
Esther was a 72-year member of Daughters of the American Revolution, an over 46-year member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the state of Iowa, United Methodist Church UMW member, charter member of Strawberry Point Historical Society, charter member of Red Hat Charmers Society, secretary of the Lodomilla Country Cemetery, charter member of Lioness Club and a member until it ended, and a life member of 50-year club NSDAR which was formed on Feb. 2, 2007.
Esther was always doing something to keep her hands busy. She enjoyed having a cup of hot tea and something sweet. She was good at keeping in touch with family and friends.
Esther was faithful to her Lord and Savior and went peacefully to heaven.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 70 years, Alvin Scott, of Strawberry Point; a daughter, Linda (Lonny) Dykema of Snellville, Ga.; two grandchildren, Leah (Joshua) Little of Lilburn, Ga., and Dr. Matthew (Kashe) Dykema of Hawaii; and two brothers, Kenneth (Mary) Kramer of Manchester and Russell (Rozella) Kramer of Blue Grass.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Robert.
