Bernard A. Schemmel, 83, of Worthington, died Sunday, July 3, 2016, at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, July 8, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave. SW, Dyersville. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery.
Bernie was born on Sept. 15, 1932, in Worthington, the son of Ben A. and Rose Mary (Billmeyer) Schemmel. Bernie enjoyed farming with his brother, LeRoy, on the Century Farm where they raised beef cattle. Bernie had a prized collection of antique tractors and loved participating in local parades. In his later years, he enjoyed driving around the countryside and dining at the Country Junction. He was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica.
Survivors include his sisters-in-law, Gladys Schemmel and Madonna Gudenkauf; and 19 nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Leo and LeRoy Schemmel, Jean (Walter) Mormann, Marion (Vernon) Gudenkauf and Pearl (Gerald) Recker; and a nephew, Gary Recker.
A memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to thank the staff at Shady Rest Care Center, Father Dennis Quint and Father Jeff Dole, and Above and Beyond Hospice for their skilled care and compassion shown to Bernie in his final years.
