HOWARD MOHR
Victor
Howard Mohr, 95, of Williamsburg, formerly of Victor, passed away Monday, April 27, 2015, at
Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg. A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, at Smith Funeral
Home in Victor, with Pastor Gary Van Heukelom of Highland Ridge Community Care Center officiating. Interment will be in Victor Memorial Cemetery.
Howard E. Mohr was born in 1919 to parents Everett and Mary Paeper Mohr. He resided on a farm until the family moved into Victor, and after graduation began his career in the service station business. Dad came from the time of the "Greatest Generation" that knew and experienced the hardship of difficult times. Through hard work my father and mother built a successful business in Victor. He later expanded, buying a gasoline delivery truck, and in 1946, built his own gas station that still stands today in Victor. He owned a gas station in Ladora and leased several others in Millersburg, Marengo and Montezuma. He was always willing to extend credit to those young farmers just starting out in the business or those who needed home heating oil but could not afford to pay upfront.
He married Jean Husted (formerly of North English) in Montezuma in June 1941, six months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. They made their home in Victor and this marriage gave them three children: Tom, Janie and Bobby.
Dad was active in the Victor Lions Club for over 50 years and in 1997, was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated service to the Lions Club.
He loved fishing and traveled to Canada twice a year for close to 40 years and always took a few of the local fishermen with him. He knew the best local farm ponds in the Victor area.
Dad had the good fortune of being able to winter in Texas for over 25 years and established many friendships during those winter months. My parents moved to Highland Ridge in Williamsburg 12 years ago and more friendships and activity grew from this experience.
My father entered Highland Ridge Care Center seven months ago and there are not enough kind words in the King's English to express my gratitude to the staff for the care he received.
Dad endured the tragedy of having to bury two of his children, Janie in 1960 and Tom in 1981. He also was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Harold (my Uncle PeeWee) of Brooklyn; and his wife of 72 years, Jean.
He is survived by his youngest boy, Bobby, of Williamsburg.
