Video: Decorah's state swim performance

Nov. 9, 2011 8:18 am
The Decorah girls swim team notched its second-straight top 10 statefinish this season. The VIkings finished seventh with 122.5 points. They just missed their first top 5 finish, due to being disqualified in the opening relay that they appeared to win, however, an official noticed one of the swimmers left the blocks early and made the call. Decorah swimmers rebounded and claimed six total medals at the Horne Henry Center of the Marshalltown YMCA.
Listen to what Vikings Coach Steph Huber had to say:
Allison Orvis and Hannah Maher each claimed three medals, including two individual medals apiece. Orvis was fifth and sixth in the 500 free and 200 free out of the second heat in each. She trimmed about nine seconds off her qualifying time in the 500 free.
Maher claimed her sixth individual medal in as many tries at the state meet, finishing third or better in all of them. She was third in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley - she was runner-up in those same events a year ago.
Here's her take on the day.
Decorah bounced back with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay, featuring Orvis, Samantha Cuvelier, MacKenzie Smith and Maher. Diver Marea Holkesvik was also sixth.
They were looking to build this year on last year's finish and were succesful. Decorah returns most of its points from this season so a third top 10 finish is a possibility.
