Don was born Dec. 22, 1931, on the Krug Heritage family farm near Atkins, Iowa, to George and Emma (Daleske) Krug. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in rural Atkins and graduated from Atkins High School in 1949. He served his country as a drill sergeant
in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954, stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
Don married Ila Jean Taschner on June 30, 1954, and they made their life on the family farm, raising livestock and crops, retiring in 2007. Don remained active on the farm, helping where needed until his death. Don dedicated his life to his community through his involvement in the AH Schueler American Legion Post 217 until his death, as a 4-H club leader of the Fremont Go-Getters for 22 years, as a member of the Benton Community school board for 12 years and as a Fremont Township trustee. He was a member of the Benton County Pork Producers, Benton County Cattlemen's Association and the Farm Bureau.
Don and Ila Jean celebrated 52 years of marriage, and together they raised five sons who survive him, Richard Allen (Janene) of Dysart, Randall Ray (Sheila) of Cedar Rapids, John Jay (Cindy) of Omaha, Neb., Jeffrey Donald (Linda) of Mount Pleasant and James Curtis (Gina) of Newhall; along with 10 grandchildren, Lexa, Trevor and Weston Krug of Dysart, Iowa, Ryan (Angie) and Brandon Krug of the Twin Cities, Minn., Lindsey Wages (Benjamin) of Orlando, Fla., Logan Krug of Nashville, Tenn., Rachel Krug of Denver, Colo., Tyler Krug (Devyn) of Atkins, Iowa, and Anna Krug of Denver, Colo.; great-grandchild, Aurelia Krug of the Twin Cities; his brother, Kenneth (Ann) Krug of Atkins; and sister-in-law, Barb Taschner (Don, deceased) of Minneapolis, Minn. Don was looking forward to the births of two great-grandchildren later this year. Don will be greatly missed by his special friend, Colleen Hadley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His family will remember him for his patience, sincerity, dedication, honesty and his faith in the risen Christ Jesus.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila Jean; his parents, George and Emma Krug; and granddaughter, Lauren Krug.
Visitation will be Friday, April 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church fellowship hall.
