Luanna Mae "Lu" Happel, 76, died Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.
Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins, with Pastor Douglas Woltemath officiating. Interment will be at St. Stephen's Cemetery near Atkins. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone.
A memorial fund has been established.
Luanna was born Jan. 17, 1940, in Keystone to Albert and Henrietta (Steinford) Kuhl, and graduated from Van Horne High School.
On April 17, 1960, she was united in marriage to Robert W. "Bob" Happel at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He preceded her in death on July 27, 2005.
"Lu" was the familiar and friendly face greeting diners at the Ced-Rel Supper Club, where she served as hostess for 54 years. She loved being part of the staff and the many friends she made over the years.
She is survived by two sons, William and wife Christine of Woodbury, Minn., and Jeffrey and wife Angela of Cedar Rapids; her daughter, Stephanie Phelps of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Danielle, Cassie and Benton Happel, Nile Happel and Emily, Claire and Ryan Phelps; and her sisters, Bernice (Sheldon) Thompson of Van Horne, Darlene Shoemaker of Silvis, Ill., and Linda Touro of Cedar Rapids.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two infant brothers and her sister, Nadine Grawet.
