Herbert Lewis "Herb" Townsend, 84, of Iowa City, formerly of Wilton, died peacefully at Oaknoll Retirement Community in Iowa City on Friday, Sept. 5, 2014. His funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at
First Presbyterian Church, 213 Fifth St., Wilton. A lunch will be served at the church following the service. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Bentley Funeral Home in Wilton. Addi-tional visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be in Oakdale Cem-etery, Wilton.
Herb was born Sept. 27, 1929, in Cedar County, Iowa, to Frank and Carrie (Kaufmann) Townsend. He married Nancy Patterson Shamdin on July 23, 1988, in Washington, Iowa. She was the love of his life and he smiled and enjoyed life so much more after they met. In 2013, the couple hosted a 25th anniversary celebration for their extended family which was a joyful event for all who attended.
Herb graduated from Wilton High School and was a farmer, businessman and loving family and community member. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and was stationed on an aircraft carrier, doing maintenance on military airplanes.
Herb loved the land and seeing the crops grow.
Herb was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilton, where he served as both elder and deacon. He was a board member of the Wilton Savings Bank.
Herb was an avid Hawkeye fan and enthusiastic supporter of the University of Iowa athletic program, University of Iowa Foundation and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their four children, Laith Shamdin, Sannia (Michael) Mollman, Nancy (Joel) Rizor and Robert (Elaine) Shamdin. Grandchildren include Chad Mollman, Sarah (Marty) Lane, Alison Mollman, Elizabeth and Alec Rizor, Abigail, Katherine and James Shamdin. There are four great-grandchildren. His nine nieces and nephews are Elizabeth (Tim) Stoffer, Mary (Blair Frank) Kirkpatrick, Charles (Denise) Townsend, Frank (Kristi) Townsend, Barb (Ron) Soenksen, Linda (Larry, deceased) Shoppa, Joan (Fred) Bartenhagen, Gary (Darla) Glenney and Dwight (Dianne) Glenney. Great-nieces and great-nephews are T.J. (Tana) Stoffer, Christi (Brian) Davis, Emilee (Gabriel) Alesi, Melinda (John) Dobrowolski, Andrew Crooks, Courtney (Alex) Brase, Jared and Nolan Townsend, Mark (Maria) Binning, Whitney and Wade Soenksen, Lori (Brian) Lockwood, Debbie (Dennis) Doehrmann, Chad Shoppa, Doug (Ann) Bartenhagen, Daniel Bartenhagen, Brian (Lisa) Glenney, Sharon (Matt) Bridges, Carrie (Jan) Turecek, Ryan (Amanda) Glenney and Kate Glenney. There are 15 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mildred, and husband Merle Glenney; and brother, Fred and wife Ruth Townsend.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Wilton, Iowa City Hospice or another charity of your choice.
