Vernon W. "Vern" Nerad, 86, of Iowa City, died Sunday, June 26, 2016, at the Veteran's Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Pastor Jeff Tackaberry will officiate. Burial with military graveside rites will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Vernon Nerad Memorial Fund, which will benefit various veterans organizations.
Born May 30, 1930, in Iowa City, the son of William and Clara (Schukar) Nerad, Vern grew up in Iowa City and graduated from Iowa City High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later served for many years in the Army Reserves. Vern was proud of his military service. He was a member of the Coralville American Legion, VFW, the Korean War Veterans Association, NCOA, the Fort McCoy Area Council and Iowa City Noon Optimists.
He worked for Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Co. in Iowa City, retiring in 1992. Vern also worked for Linder Tire Service in Iowa City and at various Iowa athletic events. Vern was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, attending both home and away Iowa football games since the 1950s. He was a longtime member of the I-Club.
He married Betty Seaton in April 1957. The couple later divorced. Vern married B. Charlene French in July 1996. Charlene passed away in 1998.
Vern is survived by his children, Kevin Nerad (Nan) of Iowa City, David Nerad of Coralville, Lynette Nerad (Don Campbell) of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Brian Nerad of University Heights; grandchildren, Alex Nerad, Kristen Robinson (Keith) and Tyler Nerad; and a great-granddaughter, Paisley Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Charlene; and a daughter-in-law, Melissa Nerad.
