Flickinger, Harold R.
Harold R. Flickinger, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, with the Rev. Stephen K. Preus officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton, with graveside military rites conducted by Geo. G. Hardinger American Legion Post 475 of Garrison and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton.
A memorial fund has been established.
Harold was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Garrison, to Dale and Edna (Banse) Flickinger, and graduated from Garrison High School. During the Korean War he served his nation in the U.S. Army. On Dec. 10, 1950, he was united in marriage to Bernita Alpers at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. They would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary on Dec. 10 of this year.
Before his retirement Harold was employed by the Iowa DOT for 28 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, the Geo. G. Hardinger American Legion Post 475 of Garrison, and was a past Worthy President of the Vinton Eagles Club.
He is survived by his wife, Bernita of Vinton; his children, Teresa (George) Vopelak of Dysart and Craig Flickinger of Vinton; his grandchildren, Derek (Tammy) Vopelak of Dysart and Josh (Ali) Volante of Clutier; his great-grandsons, Clayton and Coleton Vopelak; his sister, Lauretta Petersen of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald Flickinger.
