John Lloyd Geater, 92, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab in Vinton of natural causes. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednes-day, Dec. 31, at Prairie Creek Christian Church, rural Vinton, with Pastors David Arnold and Dennis Sackett officiating. Visita-tion will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, rural Vinton.

John was born March 3, 1922, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Ray and Hazel Edmonds Geater. He attended Harrison Country School No. 2 and graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1942.

On Sept. 16, 1944, John was united in marriage with Irene Leona Price in Vinton. The couple made their home on their farm in Benton County. Irene preceded him in death Dec. 21, 2014.

He was a member of Prairie Creek Christian Church in rural Vinton. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

John is survived by one son, Benny (Carol) Geater of Vinton; four grandchildren, Kris and Bradley (Jaye) Geater and JoLynne and Teri Richardson; six great-grandchildren, Crew, Ramsay, Jackson and Vivien Geater, Colin Menegay and Draeden Spang; one brother, Lyle (Lillian) Geater of Vinton; and two sisters, Zelda Bower and Mary Ellen Rogers, both of Vinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 70 years, Irene; one brother, Don Geater; and two sisters, Betty Linsey and Dorothy Yerkes.

A memorial fund has been established.
