Larry Lee Fett, 88, died Friday, June 29, 2018, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jessica Crane Munoz officiating. Interment will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Vinton with graveside military rites conducted by the George G. Luckey American Legion Post No. 57 and United States Air Force military honors. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to
7 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Larry was born April 4, 1930, in Audubon, Iowa, the son of Bruce and Violet (Varble) Fett. He graduated from Audubon High School and Northwest Missouri State University with a master's degree in physical education and was inducted into the Northwest Missouri State Athletics' Hall of Fame. Larry served his country in the National Guard and active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a radar operator. On Dec. 9, 1951, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Kauffman in Audubon.
Larry worked as a teacher, principal and coach in Essex, Iowa, for five years; Corning, Iowa, for two years; and Vinton for four years. He owned and operated Larry's Clothing in Vinton for 25 years, retiring in 1990. Larry was very active in his community as a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, the Vinton retail board for 25 years, the Vinton Lions Club board of directors, the Benton County Fair board and as a member of the Vinton Country Club. He also served on the Vinton school board for many years. Larry also was a lover of Arabian horses.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his children, Cynthia (Steve) Thoren of Vinton and Michael (Jacqueline) Fett of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Austin, Mitchell and Madison Dellamuth and Heather Schmidt; and his brother, Darrell (Evelyn) Fett of Port Ludlow, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
